ARIEL AUSTIN

Ariel Austin is a fourth year Dual Degree Engineering Program student. Ariel studied Mathematics for three years at Spelman College and is currently studying Industrial Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. A native of Bowie, Maryland, Ariel has always been interested in problem solving and the real world applications of her studies. Ariel has been impactful in community involvement by tutoring at Friendship Baptist Church (ATL), volunteering at Dunbar Elementary School (ATL) and mentoring at the Urban League of Rochester. Throughout her collegiate career, Ariel has been the recipient of numerous awards such as the Accenture Achievement Award, Spelman College Lockheed Martin Scholarship, and a National Science Foundation Award for STEM. During her summers, Ariel had internships in Quality Engineering with Arclin and Technology Consulting with Deloitte. Ariel is an exemplary student, with goals to consistently help others and make change in this world.

ANDRE BROWN

Andre Brown is a freshman, dual degree applied physics and engineering major at Morehouse College. Born in Long Island, NY and raised in Dallas, GA, Andre developed an interest in engineering due to the limitless possibilities to design and create new things to help communities in need. At school, Andre is involved with AUC MakeWay, an engineering club of DDEP students from Clark Atlanta, Spelman College, and Morehouse College. This year, Andre served as a project administrator on MakeWay’s Solar Decathlon Team, which competed against 35 other collegiate institutions in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. He played a fundamental role in designing and 3D modeling the solar home used for the project. Andre has been involved in a variety of community service projects. He volunteered at the Gateway Center in Atlanta to help men transition out of homelessness, and served as a mentor to middle and high school students at the Latino Youth Leadership Conference. In addition, Andre is a Howard Thurman Honors Program Scholar, an alumnus of A Better Chance, and an alumnus of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT).

DEAUNNA DANIELS

DeAunna Daniels is a junior at Spelman College, majoring in chemistry with a dual degree focus in chemical engineering. Daniels is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers, the Research Initiative for Scientific Advancement, and the Spelman College Chemistry Club. She has been named an ExxonMobil Wise Scholar and a Zell Miller Scholar, was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society, and was presented with a Georgia Certificate of Merit and a Spelman College RISE Fellowship. Through the Spelman College RISE Program, she has conducted research in the fields of spectroscopy and plant biology. She also interned in global technology at Colgate-Palmolive where she conducted research in the oral care department’s hard tissues group. She alsoconducted material science, chemical engineering, and immunology biomedical research. She has also presented research on high resolution coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy, optical visualization, metal uptake in plants, and plasmacytoid dendritic cells at Spelman College Research Day, the Summer Research Symposium in Atlanta, GA, and the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Indianapolis, IN. 

KEYSHAWN MALONE

Keyshawn Malone is a freshman at Clark Atlanta University where he is a dual degree engineering major with a concentration in mathematics. A  native of Chicago, Illinois, he decided to continue his education at Clark Atlanta to pursue his goal of becoming an engineer due to his desire to do more for the world we live in and decrease the chances of reoccurring problems. He has received many awards throughout his academic career, including completing his first semester at CAU with a 4.0 G.P.A. He has been an active volunteer, participating in community activities including cleaning up parks, picking up trash, and feeding the homeless during Thanksgiving since some people don’t have the luxury of eating with their families. He is looking forward to being part of NSBE. He recently served as an information technology assistant, integrating his classrooom experience into his work as he strives to achieve greatness.

John Milton is a junior at Morehouse College, majoring in applied physics with a dual degree concentration in mechanical engineering. John grew up in Dacula, GA a small city about an hour northeast of Atlanta, GA. It is here where his spark for engineering first developed from his passion of playing with Legos. This led him to intro engineering classes in high school where he developed his design skills using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD and Fusion. At Morehouse, these skills were enhanced in the Morehouse Makerspace, a lab setting for students and faculty work on hands-on projects with new technologies. For John, this was a 3-D printed quadcopter drone with parts designed by him made from 3-D printers in house. This projects serve towards his larger goal of improving current drone designs to become more efficient as the battery life of a drone limits its flight time and thus capabilities to serve society. In addition, John is heavy involved with the AUC NSBE chapter and serves at the T.O.R.C.H Chair for the 2019-2020 school year. In this role, he is responsible for organizing community service events for chapter members which have included A Walk for Education and volunteering at Metro Atlanta Urban Farms to name a few. Last but certainly not least, John succeeds in the classroom being an Honor Roll Student and placed on the Dean’s List for every semester he has been at Morehouse College. 

GIDEON NDEH

Gideon Ndeh is a sophomore at Morehouse College, majoring in general science with a dual degree focus in mechanical engineering. A native of Bamenda, Cameroon, Gideon became interested in engineering due to the underdevelopment of facilities and resources in his village of Mankon. Living in the village, Gideon experienced some of the difficulties that plague the community. Using his past experiences, Gideons ultimate goal is to create projects to renovate roads, filter dirty water to avoid diseases, renovate the community schools to increase education, improve the local hospitals to better care for patients, implement a reliable source of electricity to the community enabling people to have access to the internet, and create recreation areas and buildings such as parks, and playgrounds in hopes of creating a safe environment for everyone to come together. In addition, he desires to be in the position to mentor and expose younger children to STEM opportunities. Many children, especially from predominately black communities do not see many successful people from their communities in STEM fields so they are not motivated to pursue a career in STEM; Gideon hope is to change that. At Morehouse College, Gideon participates in clubs while maintaining a high academic performance. He is a member of NSBE as well as an ambassador for the AUC African Student Association. He often lends a hand when needed. He stops by the DDEP office at least once a week to catch up on the latest news. Gideon participates in work study where he is a community assistant for the department of housing. Academically, Gideon has been awarded with the Top Ranking GPA Scholar his freshman year.

Eric R. Patterson is a fourth year Dual Degree Engineering Program student currently studying chemical engineering at the University of Michigan. He has also majored in applied physics at Morehouse College. He has served as research assistant, working on power optimization of electro-thermal systems at Howard University, where he focused on improving lithium ion batteries by vertically aligning carbon nanotubes. He was also a research assistant at Morehouse College, peforming extensive lithography to conduct research related to terahertz metamaterials, and at Colorado State University, where he worked on EUV Mass Spectrometer Laser Ablation System, among other projects. He is the alumni relations chairman for the Atlanta University Center Consortium Dual Degree Engineering Program and served as the society events chair for the National Society of Leadership and Success and historian for Morehouse Chapel Assistants. He is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers. His accomplishments include the Engineering Excellence Scholarship Award, the Engineering Leadership Scholarship Awards, and the Best Scientific Communication Award at the Power Optimization of Electro Thermal Systems at the University of Illinois. 

STEPHEN SEYMOUR

Stephen Seymour is a junior dual-degree applied physics and electrical engineering major from Nassau, Bahamas. During his time at Morehouse, Stephen has been very active in the STEM community. During his freshman year, he formed and led engineering teams to place second at STEM competitions across the country. After successfully working with his small friend group, Stephen decided to create more opportunities for other students by co-founding the AUC (Atlanta University Center) MakeWay, the only engineering design organization in the AUC where students are working on projects ranging from building rockets to designing zero energy emission homes supported by NASA and the US Department of Energy. While at Morehouse he has completed internships in the automotive and software industries at BorgWarner and Microsoft respectively. This summer he will work as an electrical engineering hardware intern at Microsoft (the first from Morehouse College to fill this position).

Otto Benjamin Clarence Taylor III is a Morehouse College sophomore, applied physics major with a dual-degree focus in electrical engineering. He was born in Rockford, IL and partially raised on the South Side of Chicago. At Morehouse, Taylor participated in the SABR Analytic Conference, discussing the state of analytics in baseball. He has interned at Northrop Grumman, furthering his knowledge of engineering topics, data manipulation and multifunctional space hardware. He has also interned at the Google Computer Science Summer Institute working on computer science and coding with Google engineers as he developed a software application. Otto is a student project team member at the Morehouse College Makerspace,  is a member of the AUC Chapter National Society of Black Engineers and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, the National Society of Leadership & Success, and is a Morehouse College Top Ranking GPA Scholar.
